In my most recent post, I introduced Chilli – the chinchilla that my friends rescued and Matt and I took in.  As you know, she was found in the middle of the road, surrounded by cats!  Unfortunately, she did not survive and passed away the next day around 8pm.  I like to think that she was traumatized and in shock, rather than us adopting her being the cause of her death.   She left us just as quickly as she entered our lives: RIP Chilli.

I was extremely bummed as I have been wanting a cuddly animal for so long.  Now what was I to do with all the hay, pellets and pine shavings?! Well… answer solved when that following Sunday, my friend Annie (one of the ones who found the original Chilli), went to the Humane Society and got us two chinchillas!  They were selling for $65 each, but she got a deal… 2 for $65!  Can’t pass that up!

Now, we are the parents of 2 chinchillas and in honor of the first Chilli, we named her Chilli (2) and Pepper!  Matt also likes to call them, our “little monsters.”  Welcome to our humble home.

They look real cute and cuddly, but let me tell you – they sure can bite!  Apparently their teeth never stop growing!  One day, I decided to hang out by their cage and put my feet near there.  Well, maybe my foot was stinky because Pepper took a big bite of my toe and it even started bleeding!  That sure taught me to keep my toes away from the cage!

Even though she bit me, I still love her.  You may ask why we named her Pepper?  She is slightly darker than Chilli and well, Matt and I love chili peppers!  Keep it spicy!  Which oddly, Pepper is the more “spicy” mischievous, daring character – she escaped while Matt was cleaning the cage.  One taste of freedom and she keeps trying to poke her nose out the cage!  She’s a crazy one!

And here’s Chilli – the sweeter more docile one.

We are excited for our new pets and although we had fish and Gil before, these chinchillas require more care and attention – so cheers to our first step at Parenting!

We’ll let you know how we do (keep your fingers crossed because one of my pessimistic friends gave us only six months for them to survive!  We’ll show her! Ha!)
